Overview
Pacific Forum has six fellowship programs which each offer both resident and non-resident fellowships.
Pacific Forum has hosted over 100 resident fellows from 21 countries world-wide since 2002. Pacific Forum’s fellowship programs offer promising scholars and young professionals the opportunity to serve as researchers with Pacific Forum and develop hands-on expertise on Indo-Pacific policy issues. Resident fellows are based in Hawaii to conduct research under the mentorship of Pacific Forum staff and to help with ongoing projects and programs. Non-resident fellows conduct research from their home country under the mentorship of Pacific Forum staff and affiliates. Both resident and non-resident fellows are inducted into Pacific Forum’s flagship next-generation initiative, the Young Leaders Program, and have the opportunity to attend Pacific Forum conferences in Hawaii and the region.

Legacy Fellowships
Currently, Pacific Forum maintains three “Legacy Fellowship” programs: the Vasey Fellowship, James A. Kelly Korean Studies Fellowship, and the WSD-Handa Fellowship. Applications for Legacy Fellowships are due on April 30 (for fall/winter fellowships) and October 31 (for spring/summer fellowships). Resident fellowships are six months in duration, and start Jan. 1 or July 1, although extensions may be possible based on the fellow’s performance and other considerations. Non-resident fellowships must be completed within one year and run January 1–December 31 or July 1–June 30 of every year.
Partner-sponsored Fellowships
Pacific Forum offers three “Partner-sponsored Fellowship” programs: the Women, Peace, and Security Fellowship, the Korea Foundation Fellowship and the Nonproliferation Fellowship. Please see individual Partner-sponsored Fellowship pages for their deadlines.
Fellowship Duties
Both resident and non-resident fellows complete a self-directed research project culminating as a research paper that will be published in the Pacific Forum Issues & Insights working paper series or other external journals.
Resident Fellowship Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent research to produce a publishable research paper by end of fellowship term.
- Assist and participate in Pacific Forum conferences and Hawaii-based workshops and seminars.
- Actively participate in Pacific Forum’s Young Leaders program (if 35 years of age or younger).
- Conduct research for Comparative Connections.
- Conduct research for senior staff on various economic, political, and security issues.
Non-resident Fellowship Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent research to produce a publishable research paper by end of fellowship term.
- Actively participate in Pacific Forum’s Young Leaders program (if 35 years of age or younger).
- Conduct research for Comparative Connections.
- Attend Pacific Forum conferences.
