Prior to joining the Pacific Forum, Susan served for 24 years in the Foreign Service as a Public Diplomacy officer in the U.S. State Department. A Honolulu resident, she has participated in APCSS programs, roundtable discussions with the Fellows at the Pacific Forum, East-West Center activities, and discussions focused on careers in diplomacy. Her Foreign Service career included posts in the Asia-Pacific, Europe and South America, serving in Portugal, Brazil, the PRC, Taiwan and Indonesia as well as Washington, DC in a range of public diplomacy roles. In the United States, Susan served as Public Diplomacy Advisor to the Commander, Pacific Command in Camp Smith, on the Board of Examiners for the Foreign Service, and State Department Advisor to the Commander, U.S. Coast Guard. She supported Presidential and Cabinet visits in China, APEC, Northern Ireland, Canada, and the UN Conference on Climate Change in Indonesia. Her professional strengths are international exchanges and strategic communication.
