Opening Session: Scoping “Game-changing technologies” & Geopolitics
This session explores the concept of game-changing technologies and their place in national, regional, and global strategies. What are clear examples of game-changing technologies for geopolitics, historically and today? Which technologies enable “game-changing technologies”? What is the relationship between “foundational,” “emerging,” and “critical” technologies? Is the nature or pace of today’s game-changing technologies unique? Where do game-changing technologies fit in the domestic and strategic policies of the United States, Japan, and other countries in the region? What is the impact of these technologies on global supply chains? What are the key “game-changing technology” sectors for national and international security in the United States and Japan, and what are the relative strengths and weaknesses of each country in these fields?

Do some foundational or game-changing technologies require greater levels of policy attention or coordination? In which areas might the United States and Japan enhance their collaboration? What is the role of the US-Japan alliance in managing these technologies? How do game-changing technologies fit into the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”?
