About the Speaker

His Excellency Hussain Mohamed Latheef holds the esteemed position of the 7th Vice President of the Republic of Maldives, undertaking his official responsibilities subsequent to the administration of the oath of office on
the 17th of November 2023. Initiating his academic pursuit, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef commenced his educational journey by successfully completing his primary schooling at Al-Madharusathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya in Male.

Subsequently, he furthered his academic pursuits by attaining his secondary education at Mauhadhul Dhiraasathul Islamiyya. This educational path led him to the distinguished Al-Azhar University in Egypt, where he successfully obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Service and Community Development in 2009.

Building upon this foundation, he continued his educational journey and attained a Masters degree in Business Administration from Anglia-Ruskin University in the United Kingdom in 2018.

Following the successful completion of his undergraduate degree, and preceding his election to the Parliament, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef undertook key positions in his professional journey.

He served as a Secretary at the Hulhumale’ Hospital, assumed the responsibilities of a Social Worker in the Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services and concluded this phase of his career as an Assistant Investigation Officer at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.

Commencing his political journey, Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef initially entered the scene through active participation in the 2008 Presidential Election. Subsequently, he became a member of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (P.P.M) in 2014, where he served as a Council Member and the Youth Wing Leader until his departure from the party. He then joined the People’s National Congress (P.N.C) and currently holds the position of the Vice President within the party.

In 2014, he was elected to the 18th Parliament, serving as the representative for the constituency of Faresmaathodaa. His continued commitment led to his re-election to represent the same constituency in the 19th Parliament.

Highlighting on some of his notable contributions to the Parliament, he served as the representative of the Maldives to the International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (I.P.T.P) in 2021. Additionally, he served as the Vice
Chairperson of the PAC Sub Committee E (Audit Reports Review), and as a committee member in the Committee of the Whole House Sub Committee, Joint Committee of Committee on Social Affairs and Committee on Economic Affairs, Joint Committee of Committee on National Development and Heritage and Committee on Social Affairs, Joint Committee of Public Accounts Committee and Committee on Decentralization.

He played an integral role as a contributing member to the PAC Sub Committee 4 (Review Asset and Interest Declaration Bill), PAC Sub Committee 6 (Review of Public Finance Act Amendment Bill) and the Budget Committee, Committee on Independent Institutions and Public Accounts Committee through his tenure at the Parliament.
