The Pacific Forum, in conjunction with four other institutions (the Center for Naval Analysis (CNA), the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), and the National Defense University’s Institute for National Strategic Studies (NDU/INSS)) spent much of 2008 developing an East Asia Strategy Report (EASR) for the next U.S. administration. This effort reflected our recognition that the region and the world have been transformed in the decade since the last such report was issued. A (re)statement of U.S. interests in the region, American priorities, and ways to realize them was long overdue.
