Focus Areas

Nonproliferation

The Pacific Forum regularly convenes dialogues and conferences and conducts research in support of nonproliferation and disarmament, nuclear security, and strategic trade controls; and has decades of experience working on export controls and nonproliferation policy in Asia. As US member committee for the Council for Security Cooperation in the Asia Pacific (CSCAP), the Pacific Forum co-chairs the CSCAP Nonproliferation and Disarmament (NPD) Study Group with CSCAP Vietnam; and chairs its subgroup the CSCAP Export Controls Experts Group (XCXG). The Carnegie Corporation of New York is a primary sponsor of these efforts.

The Pacific Forum and the S. Rajaratnam School for International Studies (RSIS) are the primary organizers of the CSCAP Nuclear Energy Experts Group (NEEG).

From 2013-2020, the Pacific Forum was the primary implementer for the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration to promote implementation of nonproliferation regimes and a better understanding of strategic interests.

A key component of Pacific Forum’s nonproliferation efforts continues to be conducting research and hosting workshops on strategic trade controls (STC), sponsored by the US State Department’s Export Control and Related Border Security Program (EXBS). Our engagements bring together representatives from government agencies, the private sector, academia, and think tanks across Asia, focused on Southeast Asia and Taiwan.
